Legal Requirements

A legal wedding in Slovenia is valid throughout the world. However, by Slovenian law a wedding is only legal when conducted by a government official usually in the local registry office. Church weddings on their own do not have legal status in Slovenia and cannot be registered. For this reason, our Lake Bled & Lake Bled Castle offers include a civil service and a church service as an option.

If you have been legally married elsewhere and do not require the civil service it is possible to have the church wedding only.

In order to arrange your civil wedding in Slovenia you will need to present the following original documents at least eight weeks before the date of the wedding:

1. For both bride and groom a photocopy of your valid passports. The original documents will be required at the registry office 1 day prior to the wedding

2. For both bride and groom a copy of your birth certificates which includes the names of both parents and must not be older than six months

3. If either the bride or groom is widowed, they must produce a certified copy of the death certificate of the deceased spouse

4. If either the bride or groom is divorced, they must produce proof that the divorce has been legally sealed. This document is usually called a Decree Absolute.

5. If either the bride or groom is not Slovene they must produce a document that proves that they are eligible to marry in Slovenia and the marriage is forthwith valid. This is usually called a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage. This must be issued by the authorities of your country of nationality such as local council or consulate and must not be older than three months

6. Full names, professions, date of births and nationalities of the witnesses. They also must present their passports at the registry office 1 day prior to the wedding

7. Absolute agreement of the date and time the wedding is to take place for registry office administration

8. All necessary entry visas for foreign nationals if required by Slovenian immigration law.

The No impediment and Birth certificate documents must be certified. As the almost all countries in the world have signed The Hague Convention, certification by Apostille suffices.

In addition to the legal requirements, we will also require the following documents for the church wedding:

• Baptismal Certificate issued from the Parish of your baptism (Protestant)

• Certificate of Dismission allowing you to marry outside your Parish (Catholic).
