For many couples receiving a church blessing is the true expression of their love and commitment to each other. In Lake Bled there are several churches where you can declare your love and devotion in the eyes of God. We particularly recommend St. Mary’s Church on Bled Island and St. Martin’s Church in Lake Bled.
St. Mary’s Church
St. Mary’s Church is a multi-denominational church located on Bled Island in the centre of Lake Bled. To understand the special nature of the island one needs to know the story of its creation.
Once upon a time there was a green meadow where Lake Bled lies today. In the middle was a little hill where sheep grazed on sunny days and fairies danced on starry nights. But when the sheep had grazed all the soft grass on the hill, around the rock and its top, the fairies asked the shepherds to fence in their hill so the grass would grow again. The shepherds laughed at the fairies’ request. “If you don’t fence our hill in, we’ll do it ourselves!” warned the insulted fairies. When even these threats did not help and the youngest and the most beautiful fairy slipped and fell on the hard slippery ground on the hill, the angry fairies called upon the mountain waters to cover the grassy meadow and to fence their hill with guards of water. Thus the fairy hill changed into the island in the middle of the lake where one can still feel the magical power of the fairies.
Bled Island is reached from the mainland in a traditional pletna boat, a design based on the Venetian gondola, and adapted for the calm peaceful waters of the lake many centuries ago. On reaching the island you are met by the staircase of 99 steps leading to the top of the island and the Church of St. Mary. According to old custom when two people are married on Bled Island the groom must carry the bride up these stairs to ensure a long and happy marriage. Please note that whilst it is a local custom it is not compulsory.
St. Mary’s is a beautiful baroque church decorated with frescos and amazing golden altarpieces. It will leave a lasting impression on you and your guests. After the wedding service performed in your language, you will be asked to honour the local tradition of ringing the church bell. Make it toll and the sound of the bell will fill your life with joy and laughter.
St. Martin’s Church
Positioned in the old town and near the lake in a quiet location beneath Bled Castle St. Martin’s is a Neo-Gothic building built in 1905 on the site of the earlier 15th century Gothic Church. The first chapel on this site was erected before the year 1000.
With its impressive interior and size it can accommodate larger wedding parties and benefits from its close proximity to local hotels and reception locations.
